Hotly contested in a neverending luxury competition, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. BMW 5 Series debate continues in 2024. With intuitive driver-assistance systems, plush interiors, and elevated style, which of these sophisticated sedans will you take home?
If you’re looking for the latest and greatest updates, we know you’ll love the fully redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class models. Let’s take a look at what’s new in 2024 to help you make your choice.
Refresh your luxury driving experience in a newly designed 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan. This car marks a new generation of technology, cabin comforts, and powertrains, giving you more features and refinement than ever before. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class price is slightly higher than the BMW 5 Series, but the enhanced tech and engine performance you’ll enjoy in the E-Class Sedan are more than worth it.
If you’re ready to explore the ins and outs of these two luxury sedans to see which deserves a spot in your life, we’ve got the specs and trim details you need. After reviewing the new E-Class Sedan amenities, we’re confident that you’ll agree it’s the complete luxury package.
Make a meal of the road in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan, which comes in two editions with two powertrains for ultimate performance power. The first is the E 350 4MATIC®, which uses its 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with mild-hybrid capabilities to generate 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. For an even more dynamic drive, choose the E 450 4MATIC® and gain a 375-horsepower 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder that pushes its 369 pound-feet of torque to the limit to give you a 4.4-second zero to 60 acceleration time.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class performance is truly exceptional: Both motor options pair with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to elevate their horsepower and torque even further. Standard 4MATIC® AWD delivers smooth, rich handling. The 9G-TRONIC auto transmission is smooth, and DYNAMIC SELECT can fine-tune your car’s performance with the push of a button.
BMW 5 Series performance provides similar specs but does not offer the care and hybrid attunement of the E-Class Sedan. Enter the BMW 5 Series lineup with a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, the standard engine of the 530i and 530i xDrive models. To compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan’s top specs, you’ll need to choose the BMW 5 Series 540i xDrive, which generates 375 horsepower with its 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder.
Level up your cabin experience with breakthrough connectivity, intelligent systems, and one-touch technology in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan. While our entire new Mercedes-Benz inventory is luxurious, you’ll enjoy particularly generous standard and available features in the E-Class Sedan.
From the standard 14.4-inch digital multimedia screen, an available Superscreen passenger display, to an available Burmester® 4D Surround Sound system, this car is dressed to impress. In addition, the MBUX infotainment system is layered with advanced AI, natural language capabilities, and third-party Zoom integration for on-the-go video conferencing.
Nine available interior colors, including Tonka Brown or Neva Grey, are at your beck and call inside the new E-Class Sedan cabin. MB-Tex, leather, or Nappa leather upholstery provides soft, durable seating and a selection of interior accents that will make you swoon. The E-Class Sedan’s exterior is just as modern, with luxe paint colors like Sonoran Brown Metallic and Verde Silver Metallic that turn heads on every road.

The slightly lower BMW 5 Series price reflects its less luxurious interior compared to the E-Class Sedan. The BMW cars do offer a 14.9-inch information display and a voice-controlled iDrive system along with expected technology like Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and wireless device charging. However, the BMW 5 Series Core models lack the elevated AI, Zoom conferencing, and Superscreen abilities of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class editions.
BMW 5 Series seats are covered in a perforated Veganza, and the cabin decor features fine wood trim, yet interior color options are limited to white, red, brown, or black. A considerable price increase gives you access to black, copper, or grey Merino leather. Exterior paint colors are plenty and similar to the choices of the E-Class Sedan; however, some of them come at much higher price than those of the Mercedes-Benz model.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class safety can be measured with IIHS ratings, and from 2010 to 2023, the E-Class Sedan has won IIHS Top Safety Pick awards every year.1 The 2024 model year has not yet been rated. The BMW 5 Series has won IIHS Top Safety Picks consistently for the past three years,2 with multiple model years missing the mark, potentially downgrading the BMW 5 Series safety.
Your specific maintenance fees will vary on your driving style, weather conditions, and care for either vehicle. According to J.D. Power,4,5 the Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliability and BMW 5 Series reliability are rated at a solid 83 out of 100 and 82 out of 100, respectively. These figures show that both can be considered as reliable on the road since a higher rating means translates to the car having fewer issues, with the E-Class Sedan having a slight edge over the BMW model.
